Alderman Peter Estlin
Lord Mayor of the CIty of LondonAlderman Peter Estlin took office as the 691st Lord Mayor of the City of London on 9th November 2018. He served as a Sheriff of the City of London in 2016-17 and, in that capacity, supported the then Lord Mayor on visits and official functions.
His mayoral theme is “Shaping tomorrow’s City today”, promoting digital innovation and smart cities, alongside the importance of digital skills and lifelong learning, ensuring that we have the talent to support business and innovation into the future, as well as ensuring that no one is left behind.
Peter is a senior banker with over twenty-five years’ experience with Barclays and Citigroup in London, New York and Hong Kong. He trained as a Chartered Accountant, becoming a partner with Coopers & Lybrand in 1993 before joining Salomon Brothers Asia, as regional CFO. Following a series of acquisitions and mergers he then served as CFO for Citigroup’s Corporate and Investment Banking divisions in New York and London. In 2001, Peter led the recovery of Citigroup’s banking operations in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, helping to stabilise the US banking system in a time of great turbulence. He joined Barclays in 2008 as Group Financial Controller and has been CFO of the Retail & Business Banking and Non-Core divisions as well as Interim Group CFO. He is currently a Senior Advisor to Barclays in London. Over the past 15 years he has set up and overseen banking and finance operations in India and South Africa and has been instrumental in the digitisation of the retail banking industry.
He serves on the Audit Committee of HM Treasury and was latterly Chairman of the British Airways International Advisory Board. He served as a Commissioner on both the Royal Borough of Greenwich and pan-London Fairness Commissions, focusing on equality of opportunity in education and housing. He was elected Alderman for the Ward of Coleman Street in 2013. He is Master of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers (2017/18), a Court Assistant of the Worshipful Companies of Chartered Accountants, Educators, and Ironmongers, and sponsoring Alderman for the newly formed Guild of Human Resource Professionals. He is also a member of the Guild of Freemen and the City Livery Club.
Peter is actively involved with several education and financial inclusion charities, mainly in the UK. Specifically, he has been a governor of Bridewell Royal Hospital for the past 26 years, serving as Chairman for 10 years. He is an Ambassador for OnSide Youth Zones, a pioneering national charity developing 21st century youth facilities in areas of social deprivation. He also supports Teach First, London Youth, VSO and Create.
He was born in Portsmouth to a Royal Naval family and was educated at King Edward’s Witley and the University of Bristol, where he served on the Ethics Committee until last year. Peter has been married to Lindy for 30 years. They have three children, James 25, Victoria, 23 and Annabel 21. Peter enjoys cooking, is a chocoholic, and has interests in wine and flying, but not at the same time.
Alex Manson
Head, scventures at Standard Chartered BankAlex Manson heads scventures at Standard Chartered, a new business unit established in January 2018 to lead digital innovation across the Group, invest in fintechs and other start-up companies, and promote the rapid testing and implementation of new business models.
His key responsibilities are three-fold: promoting intrapreneurship by helping the rest of the Group in problem-solving and spreading innovation best practices; running a professional investment unit to seek opportunities and manage the Group’s strategic investments in fintech companies; and thirdly managing the Venture unit which will sponsor and oversee new disruptive technology ventures that are wholly or partially owned by Standard Chartered.
Alex was previously Global Head of Transaction Banking, a position he held from 2014 to 2018. In that role, he repositioned the business to a sustainable and growing franchise, drove innovation in the bank’s core processes and its approach to clients, notably with the “Banking the ecosystem” approach.
He joined Standard Chartered as Group Head, Wholesale Banking Geographies in 2012, where he was responsible for the Bank’s regions and network strategy.
Prior to that, he was at Deutsche Bank for 12 years, notably as Global Head of Lending and Corporate Banking Coverage, and prior to that he was in Credit Suisse for 8 years. His roles spanned product and client coverage across fixed income origination and structuring and investment banking advisory and capital raising. During his career, he has worked in New York, London, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Alex holds an MBA from INSEAD and an engineering degree from the Polytechnicum of Zurich.
Andrew Naylor
Director, Central Banks & Public Policy of World Gold CouncilAndrew Naylor joined the World Gold Council in 2016. He is part of the central banks and public policy team, and leads the Council’s Islamic finance initiative. The Islamic finance initiative was the catalyst for the launch of the AAOIFI Shari’ah Standard on Gold developed in collaboration with the World Gold Council, and opens up the gold market to the $2trn Islamic finance sector. He regularly speaks at leading financial services conferences, including the EU-ASEAN Business Summit, the World Islamic Banking Conference in Bahrain, and the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum.
Prior to this role Andrew worked for international government relations consultancy firm Cicero Group advising financial institutions on foreign investment and trade policy in Asia, and the global regulatory reform agenda. In this role he provided economic and political commentary for global broadcasters including the BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC, Channel NewsAsia and China Central TV.
Before joining Cicero Group, Andrew worked at CCHQ in both the business and external relations teams.
Andrew has been a board member of the European Chamber of Commerce in Singapore since 2012, and was chairman of its financial services committee from 2012 – 2014 and treasurer from 2014 – 2016. He also sits on the management committee of the Singapore Bullion Market Association and is chairman of its public affairs group.
Andrew has a degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
