About the Event

As part of our three-day International Women's Day activities for 2022, this special Leaders in Business lunch provides an opportunity for members and guests to hear in-person from a leader in the banking industry - Amanda Murphy, Head of Commercial Banking for HSBC in South and Southeast Asia.

Amanda is a member of HSBC's Global Commercial Banking Executive Committee and has been a leader in frontline, risk and commercial banking roles throughout her career and across the globe. The conversation and Q&A will be moderated by Lewis Garrad, Partner, Career Business Leader at Mercer.

Partner, Career Business Leader, Singapore at Mercer

Amanda Murphy was appointed Head of Commercial Banking, Asia Pacific excluding Hong Kong and mainland China, with effect from December 2021, and is a member of the Global Commercial Banking Executive Committee.

Based in Singapore, Amanda leads the Commercial Banking businesses in some of the most exciting markets in the Asia Pacific region including Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. She also has oversight of Commercial Banking in Hang Seng Bank.

Amanda initially joined HSBC in 1994 and became an International Manager in 1998. Her career has spanned numerous frontline, risk and leadership roles across Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia-Pacific. Most recently, Amanda led the Commercial Bank in the UK from April 2017 and was responsible for HSBC’s relationships with over 900,000 small, medium and large business customers and a team of approximately 4,700 people.

She has a law degree from Queen’s University, Belfast, an MBA from Warwick University, and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB). In 2021, Amanda featured in the HERoes Top 100 Women Executive List for the fifth consecutive year.

Lewis Garrad is the Partner, Career Business Leader for Mercer’s People Science consulting practice across the Growth Markets region (fast growth economies). In his role, he applies his training in organisational psychology and experience in the development of data driven talent, engagement and employee performance programmes to help business leaders and HR executives design people practices that improve organisational performance. Prior to his role in Mercer, Lewis was the Managing Director for Sirota Consulting’s Asia Pacific operation.

Voted a top 101 Global Employee Engagement Influencer he is a regular contributor to publications such as the Harvard Business Review, Talent Quarterly and HQ Asia in the areas of HR data, employee engagement and leadership.

Lewis has designed and implemented some of the world’s largest HR initiatives including engagement programs for companies like Shell, Lenovo and Keppel. He has also supported the development of HR capabilities programs, including a leading role in the development of the HR Skills Framework in Singapore, partnering closely with the Ministry of Manpower, Institute of Human Resource Professional and SkillsFuture Singapore. He has deep experience making HR programs relevant for C-level executives in global companies as well as facilitating Senior Leadership Teams to help them unlock leadership effectiveness.

Lewis is chartered by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as an Occupational Psychologist, he graduated from the University of Nottingham in the UK with an MSc in Occupational Psychology and a First Class Honours BSc in Psychology & Cognitive Neuroscience. Lewis is also qualified by the British Psychological Society to use both ability tests and personality questionnaires (Hogan, NEO-PI-r) to assess talent.
