BACKGROUND

Singapore expressed its ambition to attain zero carbon emissions by the middle of the century at COP26 in Glasgow, and has recently announced that it is considering 2050, seeking public feedback on the timeline. Recently, the EMA-commissioned 'Energy 2050 Committee' produced a study outlining a number of zero-carbon options for Singapore's power production.

It is apparent that green electricity imports via subsea interconnectors will be critical in assisting the country in meeting its goals. The EMA is already moving in this direction, having just issued a tender for 1.4GW of green imports.

Simultaneously, the ASEAN Centre for Energy has been developing the concept of a 'ASEAN Power Grid,' which would boost system dependability and facilitate regional energy sharing.

This discussion is being hosted as a webinar to enable our audience to hear from expert speakers based in multiple countries.

Thomas Briault is an experienced and highly skilled advisor and chartered engineer with 20 years’ experience in low carbon and sustainability solutions. He is currently working on modelling the Singapore electricity grid to develop plausible low carbon scenarios for the future. He is also leading studies into hydrogen import into Singapore and a energy storage study for Singapore
has worked on an extensive range energy policy and decarbonisation projects, from concept through to construction. He has extensive experience of leading and directing major, complex and business-critical projects, bringing strategic insight though his understanding of the policy and regulatory environment. He works with both private and public-sector clients all around the globe, designing integrated solutions to deliver against carbon, climate and environmental requirements.

Beni Suryadi is manager of the Power, Fossil Fuels, Alternative Energy and Energy Storage Department at the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), an intergovernmental organisation within the ASEAN structure representing the 10 ASEAN Member States’ interests in the energy sector.

He is an energy professional with 12+ years of experience in managing programs and conducting research on energy and climate change, supporting the governments of 10 countries in Southeast Asia to build climate-friendly development of the energy sector under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase 2: 2021-2025.

He was the Team Leader in developing the ASEAN Energy Outlook – an ACE’s flagship publication on the regional energy trends and projections regularly presented at the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.

He is currently leading ASEAN's energy projects with the U.S., China, India, Norway, and international development agencies, overseeing over $10 million in projects’ portfolios, including the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III; the regional blueprint for electricity interconnection in the region under the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).

He is also the Project Manager of the ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT), the first official ASEAN project that integrates the issue of energy and climate change. Endorsed by the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting, the project improves the coherence between the ASEAN energy and climate policies and contributes to more climate-friendly development of the energy sector.

Ian is an expert programme and project manager with over 30 years’ experience in delivering complex multidisciplinary energy and oil & gas projects across the world. With extensive experience of assisting clients to prepare for the delivery of significant capital programmes, Ian has been embedded in client’s offices supporting major procurement activity and setting the delivery strategy including undertaking organisational design, role definition and training of client side teams. He has defined governance arrangements and reporting structures to ensure the successful delivery of these strategically important investments.

Ian led the development and establishment of project management procedures for the development and implementation phases of interconnectors within National Grid, supporting the development, procurement and construction phases of their round 1 cap and floor portfolio interconnectors. More recently Ian has supported the development and procurement phase of NeuConnect a 725 kilometer 1400 MW submarine interconnector that will directly link the German and UK electricity grids for the first time. Ian leads the Arup Fichtner JV who are providing Project and Commercial management, SHEQ and Consenting oversight as well as a comprehensive multidisciplinary technical team providing the Owners Engineer / Client Representative role.

When completed, NeuConnect will be one of the world’s longest interconnectors and is one of the first interconnectors to be financed through a project financing arrangement with investors that include Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners and Kansai Electric Power.
