As the longest-running awards initiative by an international Chamber in Singapore, we have been showcasing the best of business for over 20 years. In this very special evening, we recognise the finalists and winners of this years awards with our guest host, Sharanjit Leyl from the BBC.

This year, we will be hosting a special Virtual Awards Ceremony with live announcements of the winners in each category and audience participation. Our Guest of Honour for the evening will be Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Trade & Industry.

Mr Chan Chun Sing is Minister for Trade and Industry, responsible for driving Singapore’s economic and industrial development. He was appointed to this role and as Minister-in-charge of the Public Service from 1 May 2018. Mr Chan is also Deputy Chairman of the People’s Association since 1 October 2015.

Mr Chan was Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) from 4 May 2015 to 22 May 2018. At NTUC, he expanded the Labour Movement network to represent all working people in Singapore, and led efforts to curate and deliver timely and relevant training for workers. Mr Chan also served as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office from 9 April 2015 to 30 April 2018, upon relinquishing his prior appointments as Minister for Social and Family Development (MSF) and Second Minister for Defence, both of which he had held since 1 September 2013. At MSF, he was responsible for improving social service delivery, enhancing social safety nets and strengthening support for families in Singapore.

His other previous appointments included Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (21 May 2011 to 31 October 2012) and Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts (21 May 2011 to 31 July 2012).

Mr Chan served with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) from 1987 to 2011. He held various appointments, including Chief of Army (2010 to 2011), Chief of Staff, Joint Staff (2009 to 2010) and Commander 9th Division / Chief Infantry Officer (2007 to 2009). He left the SAF to run in the 2011 General Election and was elected Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC).

Educated at the Raffles Institution (1982 to 1985) and Raffles Junior College (1986 to 1987), Mr Chan was awarded the SAF (Overseas) and President’s Scholarship to study Economics at Christ’s College, Cambridge University in the United Kingdom in 1988 and graduated with First Class Honours. Mr Chan was awarded the Distinguished Master Strategist Award 1998 by the US Army Command and Staff College. In 2005, he completed the Sloan Fellows Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship.

Born in 1969, Mr Chan is married with three children and enjoys reading and jogging.

Sharanjit Leyl is a Singaporean producer and presenter for BBC World News.

She regularly anchors Asia Business Report and Newsday from the BBC's Singapore studio. She is also a reporter and producer on these shows along with World Business Report.

She has filed reports for radio on the BBC World Service business and arts programmes and written features for BBC news online.

Sharanjit began her broadcasting career at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1997. While there she reported for the award-winning show The Pacific Rim Report. While in Canada, she covered the protests and subsequent police brutality against students who were pepper-sprayed at the APEC summit that took place there in 1997.

She returned to Singapore in 1998 to file reports on the Asian financial crisis for CBC. She joined financial news service provider Bridge Information Systems where she wrote for its newswires on foreign exchange movements in the aftermath of the crisis. She also provided daily television and radio updates on currencies and equity movements in South East Asia.

She was approached by Bloomberg Television in 2000 and moved to its headquarters in Tokyo. There she presented its main three-hour newscast On The Money Asia, reporting on breaking financial stories as well as major news events such as the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

She also anchored a weekly lifestyle and culture segment from Asia. As one of the first main anchors for Bloomberg's Asia Pacific headquarters, she played an integral role in editing and influencing the content of its programming.

Sharanjit Leyl joined BBC World News in September 2003 and has since reported and presented from places as far afield as Pakistan, Tokyo and London.

Her noteworthy interviews include heads of state ranging from Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, New Zealand, and East Timor, former prime ministers of Australia, Malaysia and Singapore, presidents of the World Bank and the IMF, and chief executives and chairpersons from various Fortune 500 companies ranging from Microsoft to Walmart.

Born in Singapore, Sharanjit moved to Washington DC in her teens with her family, where her father was a diplomat. There she earned a degree in both journalism and English literature from The University of Maryland College Park. She then moved to Vancouver, Canada where she completed a Masters degree in English literature at the University of British Columbia which focused on post-colonial writers such as Salman Rushdie.

Richard, an Executive Director of Arcadis, is the Regional Head of Financial Institutions, AsiaPac. He leads the creation and delivery of business changing solutions to enhance FI client business performance and to improve the certainty of achieving desired returns – both across the Client’s own workplace and their investment portfolios.

A Chartered Surveyor by professional discipline, Richard has been with Arcadis for over twenty-five years, including assignments in the UK, Europe, and the Middle East and for the last ten years he has been based in Singapore. He is an experienced Programme Director who has led the delivery of technical advisory, project delivery and development monitoring on major / complex, pan geographical and pan sector programmes of work and transactions in over 30 countries. He assembles and leads teams of service delivery experts from both within Arcadis and from our wider managed community and has successfully delivered client focussed solutions on a wide range of projects and transactions.

Richard is currently the President of the British Chamber of Commerce, Singapore and has held a Board Position since 2014. Richard is also the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees at Dulwich College (Singapore) since 2016.
